A few days ago I went on a bike ride.
I hadn't planned out my course, I just wanted to ride. I ended up choosing a path I've ridden before, but this time I wanted to go further to see where the path went.
I got on the path at about 33rd and Holdredge; I rode it way out past 98th street. Just past 84th street is where the concrete path became gravel, and all of the sudden I was in the country.
It was amazing. I started seeing horse crossing signs next to bike crossing signs, and noticed paths for horses weaving up the hills next to the bike path. To get a better view of my surroundings, I took my bike up one of the horse paths and was blown away by how green, vast and beautiful the countryside was.
As I paused for a awhile to enjoy the landscape and the pleasant day, a thought came to my mind:
Just keep pedaling. Just keep moving forward and be amazed by the beauty you'll see. Maybe there were good things behind you, but there are greater things ahead.
My desire to press on and keep moving forward led me to this incredible experience I would not have had if I'd given up and turned around.
This made me think about my life and how stuck I've felt lately. Things haven't really been going the way I would like them to and I've just wanted to give up. My biking adventure, though, encouraged me to keep pedaling - to keep moving forward. If you don't go forward then you'll never know what greater things there are for you to experience. Life isn't going to get better if you stay stagnant in the same place - might as well move on to see what's ahead. Maybe it will be hard for awhile, but I'm convinced there must be something better worth striving for. I might as well try at least - I've got nothing left to loose.
